Looking to get out and be social? Want a fun activity to try? We’ve got you covered with our monthly activity article.
Each month we will highlight a different activity or event for grown-ups to get out and try. The idea is to get a group of people together to socialize, have fun, and try something new.
Living in the same community for an extended period of time it’s easy to overlook all there is to do. Even if you are new to the area, many people don’t seek out local attractions. Exploring community highlights is typically saved for vacations elsewhere or when family is coming to visit from far away.
Whether you live in a big city or a small town, there is always something to explore; every area has its own history, magic and beauty. Which is why we are encouraging you to make the time to get to know your own hometown a little better in this Pastime Pursuits article.
Think of it this way, if you had visitors from out of town, what would you tell them to do? What events would you suggest they attend, what are the main attractions in your community? Now, along with a friend or two put together a list of your community’s highlights, then set a day to go and explore them.
When you start considering all of the public parks, trails, farmer’s markets, historical sites, museums, sports teams, eateries, coffee shops and festivals, one day might not be enough; but it’s a good start.
Playing tourist in your own town not only gets you out of the house and into different parts of your community with friends, it gets you engaging with the local shopkeepers, museum curators, artisans, and others who are enjoying the same activities as you. You might even make some new friends along the way!
Keep things simple and inexpensive, or use it as a “staycation” and spend a bit more money to experience the bigger tourist attractions. Take photos along the way, and if you need more inspiration on what to do or where to go, check out a hotel or welcoming centre for their activity brochures.
